Default How do you reset CEL?

CEL came on due to very small emissions leak detected (gas cap). I tried disconnecting the battery to reset the CEL light and was unsuccessful. Any other ways to reset it?

BTW on the battery note... what a horrible design!

Default oops…I thought it was service interval. CEL--VCDS/scan tool or dealer.

CEL may reset itself after a certain time for emissions leak/gas cap but otherwise you may have to go to a dealer or use VCDS or some aftermarket scanner tool that resets codes.

If what triggered a CEL was a transient anomaly or a one time issue like a loose gas cap, the CEL will usually go out on its own after driving for a period of time (in your case it might stay on until you replaced the defective cap). Another way to to reset it without waiting is with a VCDS cable and software. If it's an intermittent issue, the CEL will return.

If the CEL is flashing go to the dealer.

If not, it will probably correct itself after several starts.

Best

Not flashing most likely defective gas cap... And as for owners manual it does not explain how to reset cel. Thank to all who replied.

Hmmmm, can't imagine why other members actually tried to give him some input on how to do it. Short reply = figure it out yourself. Not what these forums are all about. Also, he said the info is not in the Owner's Manual.

I wouldn't be on this forum if I didn't want the experience of owners who have already experienced the same situations and can add valuable input. Otherwise, why do these forums exist? (Rhetorical question, BTW.)

Ok, I think Sloop has been adequately chastised for his original reply and has edited his post. Let's move on.
