I am currently driving a Cayman S and an E90 325i. Both cars are great. In fact, the Cayman S is the best car I've ever owned (and I've had Supra's, an NSX, Corvette's, Elise, etc).

However, I'm looking to free up some money while reducing my costs. I just don't have time for 2 cars and own a home now. I'm also looking to shift my priorities away from the cars into other things.

So, I've been looking at the E92 M3 and S5. Knowing full well that they are very different cars. The E92 being closer to the Cayman in spirit, and the S5 being more a luxury offering. The S5 appeals to me for a few reasons: 1. Significantly cheaper than an equivalent M3, 2. More distinctive/attention-grabbing styling, 3. Better interior. The M3 wins in steering feel, handling, power, and IMO, sound (I like the high-pitched V8 sound). But where I work (Westport, CT), E92's are a dime a dozen and EVERYWHERE.

I have a few questions:

- If I find a car with the adjustable suspension, is it impossible to swap in coilovers at that point?
- Did I read correctly that there is no live traffic on the 2008/2009? Is it impossible to upgrade?
- On the models with live traffic, is it like BMW's system where it shows the traffic on the map or on a list in real time, or do you have to set a destination first before it shows traffic info?
- What's the best exhaust system for my taste: moderately loud with some *****, but little drone and tends to the smoother, higher pitched sound. (my Tubi on the Cayman is a perfect example, or an Active Autowerke Signature on the M3)

If you're considering the V8 S5' 2008 - 2012, then you might want to look for a 2010 or later, as those have the upgraded MMI 3. Not sure, but I don't think you can get live traffic on the MMI 2. Live traffic is a subscription, and in my opinion worth it. I use it every day in my 2013 S5. No need to plot a destination, just select the Nav map, and shows in green, yellow orange and red for your hwy. the info page also gives accident updates along your route.

As far as exhaust, the AWE system seems to get good reviews, and is designed to reduce drone.

Is your MMI the same as in a 2013? Sounds worth getting a 2010 for. Shame they got rid of the adaptive headlights.

My S5 is a 2013 with the MMI 3. The adaptive headlights are an option with the Prestige Pkg on 2013, and I believe on the 2011's up.

Another question:

What option is necessary for the adjustable steering?

If that option is present, is it still possible to adjust the steering assist via VAGCOM?

OP, regarding the S5 vs. M3. IMO, it depends on were you place value in buying a car. Except for the present model year, all S5's have the V8. It is not a quick car but more of a touring GT. There would be a choice of MT or Auto (not dual-clutch). If you are interested in the S5 and if you budget allows look at the new S5. It has the 3.0T engine and optional DSG.

I would only do a V8 S5. I actually drove an S5 and M3 back to back yesterday. Like the interior on the S5, but the driving experience on the M3 much more. It's a lot more fun. However, the S5 was more fun than I expected.

If I can get an S5 considerably cheaper than an M3 - that might seal the deal.

Just a quick check on AutoTrader, using the same criteria of 50 mile search (from Westport, CT), MT, 2009-2012 here are the results.

Total of 4 S5's ranging in price from $44.6 - 52.2k

Total of 5 M3's ranging in price from $35 - 58k

Most of the cars had white or black exterior paint. Some had Nav. Key with the S5 is to find one with the Sports Differential. With the M3, the competition pkg is nice to have but rare.

There will be a significant edge in performance favoring the M3. Fuel economy should offset. Styling (inside and out) is subjective.

Expanding the search should procedure better results. Either way good luck in finding a car.
