I had a 2011 335d BMW and it had a terrible issue with Carbon build up. I recently learned about BG products. I understand that dealers use this to prevent carbon build up and I was wondering if anyone has an experience with these products?

Out of any fuel products, BG is consistently high rated. Although this isn't the end all solution, some like it some don't. It's like arguing fuel additives... More of a placebo effect if you ask me. I use a bottle of techron in the gas tank every so often (every 5-10k or so).

The RS4 was the first major production car with direct injection and suffered from carbon buildup more than most other Audi vehicles. From the past seven years I have been following the attempts to prevent it on those cars - from catch cans to chemical cleanings etc. No one has found a good way to prevent it (other than having the engined designed to also have a injector in the manifold).

I kind of look at it as having a timing belt that needs to be changed - mechanical cleaning seems to be the only way to take care of this issue.

That said - BG makes the best products for our vehicles and I know the BG44K on the non direct injection vehicles did a great job on cleaning the fuel systems.


Edit: As opposed to the advice given on the following post - all my trips are short ones - the engine never gets warmed up. I have 33K so far and no check engine light. I am resigned to get a carbon clean in the next year though.

Honestly, the best you can do is to avoid frequent short trips where the engine doesn't reach operating temperature and to frequently redline to get the engine real hot to burn the crap off and blow it through. Having said that, I did have a cold start misfire on cylinder 6 at around 16,000 miles and the dealer peeked into the engine and saw minor carbon buildup on that cylinder. Audi told them to drop two cans of BG44K into the tank and instruct me to drive the car hard for 50 miles, so I did. Haven't had a misfire for the past 5000 miles.

FWIW, I have a '13 RS 5 with 28K on it and no issues that I can detect with how it runs...great!
