They are not the same engine. The V8 in the R8 is from the B7 RS4. It makes less hp and peak torque is around 5000 rpm. The V8 in the RS5 is based on the R8 V10. It makes more hp and peak torque is at 4000 rpm.

Compared to Porsche................THAT caught my eye.
With Porsche, you can start out at $85-95 K for the car you decide on THEN by the time you add the things that make it exactly what you want, the car that's YOU............you easily add another $20-30 K.
Those folks are insane with their options............and pricing of same.

My mind tells me to be practical and buy either a S5 or RS5, but my heart always pulls me back to Porsche. I'm hoping to break the expensive addiction however, and buy an Audi within a year.

Production Update
Dealer notified me that my RS5 engine went into production 9-30-14 at Audi Sport GmbH. Should get a chassis number in about 2 weeks.

My last three cars were 911s. I had a stroke in May and aside from not being able to drive a MT anymore, getting out of the 911 required a lot of unseemly grunting.
I bought a 2014 rs5 cab. Didn't test drive the s5. If you keep the revs above 3000, the v8 can't be beat. Fun fun fun. My beef is with under steer, but I'm getting used to it. I find the interior to be superior to Porsche in every way.

There are lots of Audis here but very few S4's and RS5s. We have a 2014 S4 with MT. Replacing the Outback with the RS5 with Mich high performance all weather radials. It is an all year round car.
