Hi Everyone,

New member here. I've decided to get an Audi A5 (my first Audi) and I've narrowed it down to two particular cars but I'm not sure which one to go with. Please help!

The first car is a certified pre-owned 2013 A5 Prestige S-line with ~42,000 miles. It has Audi's CPO warranty until May 2019.

The other car is a 2014 A5 Prestige S-line and has ~22,00 miles. Factory warranty until 50k miles. This one is sold from a non Audi dealer (if it makes any difference).

They are about $5,000 difference in price. All things being equal, do you think it is worth the price difference to go with the newer car with less miles? I'm concerned about maintenance, resale value, and overall value. I'll be driving about 12k-15k miles a year.

ANY information and tips would be appreciated. TIA!

Depending on maintenance history, number of prior owners and clean titles. I think the '13 A5 is the better deal as they are both Prestige but the '13 has already taken the bulk of the depreciation.
Furthermore, its a CPO from an Audi dealership that will likely be covered until 5/19 or 100K given your driving average of 15K a year. 42K current+58K=100K CPO warranty.

The '14 is $5K more for the the newer year and lesser miles but it'll be out of factory warranty in 28K miles. 22K current+28K= 50K factory warranty. It is non CPO. Non Audi dealer. Makes a big difference.
Getting the VIN history and In service date of the non CPO is critical. As the '14 might have gone into service in '13 and you might have less than a year factory coverage, as it is 4 years from in service date or 50K miles. Whichever comes first.

Thanks for the response and the tip about CPO. I've been wondering about that. I'm hoping you could help me interpret the carfax since I'm a noob.

Doesn't seem very informative on the maintenance front. If I call a Audi dealership with the vin, could they give me maint. records?

Yes. You could call and ask about the VIN and service history. See if they could PDF you a copy. Otherwise, its best to go to the dealership directly and get a printout.

The '13 A5 doesn't show any service done, such as the 5k,15k,25k or 35K. You want to know that those were done.
The '13 does show that it was in dealer inventory and sold quickly. And the in-service date of 5-19-2013 does jive with the CPO of 6 years from in service of date 5-19-2019 as you mention.

The '14 shows some services performed, 15k, 25K. But it was in dealer inventory for almost 6 months, and when it did sell, it sold with 400 miles on the odo. Could be a demo maybe? That's a lot of test miles driven.
It's in service date appears to be 2-9-2014 or 2-27-2014 and it'll be out of factory warranty on or around 2-9-2018 or 2-27-2018. You'll want to verify it's in service date, given the 6 months it spent in inventory.

I still believe that if the services were done on the '13, since its a CPO and 5K less, that its the better deal. Others can chime in.

I've ruled out the 2014 since they weren't willing to budge on the price and it would be more like $6k more. I'm really leaning towards getting the '13. All services were done at the Audi dealership (15k, 25k and 35k). From my understanding, the 45k service is pretty minor right? What would be "good" price for this car and would you recommend it as a purchase ('13 with 42k miles)?

Tough questions, I really can't answer. But yes, the 45K should be minor, with the 35K a major service. At least that was the case with my S5.

Here is a similar '13 A5 certified Prestige. There are a few others around the country with lesser miles. Search and compare with what they want you to pay and negotiate.

Thanks, you've been very helpful. I compared the cars and it seems like a good deal. My last question is this- is 42k miles a lot in the overall life of an Audi?

Depends, Audi's are like supermodels. Requiring expensive and timely maintenance to keep them running well. They are not Hondas/Toyotas that you can skimp on maintenance.

Keep your CPO warranty in good standing with the dealership. Don't let them upsell you on wear and tear items like pads, rotors, fuel treatments etc. Just ask for an oil change and get a second opinion on any expensive suggested repairs.

42K miles could be a lot on a badly maintained Audi/BMW/MB or it could be nicely broken in, on a well maintained one.

A5/S5/RS5 are beautiful great driving cars. Good Luck!
