Yeah, the only downside would be weather. NC still has the 4 seasons and the Fall colors in the Blueridge mountains is something I wouldn't give up. While we still get snow in winter, it does not get as cold as upstate.

All things being equal, I think NC will be a nice middle ground between the two.

In Long Island, we're about $14k/taxes on a $600k house. Insane! SOOO looking forward to moving to NC; we're outta here in 4 years... when kids are in college, we're gone. Funny, I was thinking of selling my S5 at that time b/c I wouldn't need a 4wd car... I'd still want a convertible (I've got the Cabriolet), but maybe going with a Lexus or Mercedes at that point. Any comments re: necessity of 4wd in NC?

I would still prefer having an 4wd. Some reasons - 1) Because we get a lot of rain. On one of the maiden voyage of my S5, I went up the mountains and it was raining cats and dogs. Visibility was like less than 10 feet away. I was driving 70 mph and the S5 stuck like glue on the road inspite of the massive downpour. 2) We do get snow in most areas, except the coastal areas, so a 4wd with all season tires is still useful with 4-6 inches of snow. We don't get 1 feet or more of snow, so no need for snow tires, but 4 inches can still affect your traction.
