2003 Audi Allroad 70K miles - Tremendous whine

Bought this car a few months ago for my daughter in law. Has been running fine for a few months. All of the sudden it is making a loud whining noise. A buddy is a mechanic and says he thinks it is the transmission but suggest I get a second opinion. Has anyone had similar experience?

Guessing: steering pump, Check for air bubbles in the Reserve oil tank of the steering pump When the engine is running.

whine could be coming from anywhere
need more details, ie., general location of noise

The air pump can make a loud whine and is notorious for failure after 13 years. Is the noise at the top rear of the engine? If so, the pump has a large power plug, just unplug it and start the engine, it will cost you 5 minutes of your time to check.
