Default 2005 2.7T 170k miles

Purchased this about a month ago. body and interior in excellent condition. All electrical working except for turn signal arrows on dashboard.

Took into an Audi dealership to examine the vehicle and here is the report I received for the labor and parts.

1. Replace Valve covers (leaking) $1,675
2. Replace front axles $1,930
3. Replace axle boots
4. Rear actuator seals leaking (replace) $625
5. Transmission proshaft seal
6. Check valve hoses (broken) $480
7. Front break pads $350

I have decent mechanical knowledge owning and maintaining German cars (3 BMW's) and working on my own motorcycle so I'm planning on doing the work myself.

From the above, what would you recommend I do while I'm under the hood while I change the valve cover gaskets? I'm thinking doing timing chain replacement in addition to the above.

Thanks!

During the Valve cover gasket job, you should add the chain tensioners, cam plugs, after run coolant pump, and any vacuum lines that look the least bit questionable.
Do you know when the timing belt was done? If you don't, you should do that at the same time, and add a water pump to the list.
You should be able to complete this list yourself, for less money than the cost of the front axles.

OMG. Unbelievably much!

I bought the tripod front axle (inner side ones) for 200 USD each (in Europe). It was not cheap but the OEM one with the 4 rings printed. Labour took cca 3 hours comfortably.
Valve covers is connected with teh aforementioned chain + tensioner story.
The tensioner itself is really expensive if OEM: approx 480 eur pro piece. You can get good ones for the half of the prize.
Labour is an amount. It might take 16..-22 hours:
cam seals,
tensioners
chains
sealings
plus, the timing belt and pump included - since one has to get all this basically demounted to get the chains + tensioners free.
During this the big octopus pipe exchange (vacuum hose?) is a relax tour.
So you should pay definitely much less although I do not live there but it seems extraordinary high.

Add.
If you make such a big amount of work, consider to change 1-2 water hoses that are hard to reach later and/or they are oily.

most of that can be done DIY
i picked up a set of front axles from advanced auto (assuming your in the US, need to fill out location) for less than $200 for the pair
for the gaskets, OEM, OEM, OEM
dont go OEM, expect to have to do the VCG again very soon

id check all the suspension parts while doing axles, chances are the c-arms are done for

I get really annoyed when they dish out costs like this.

A valve cover gasket set is going to set you back about $100, you need to get a little tool to lift the tensioners to get the seals underneath (I think about $20). Do the cam caps while you're there. (2-3 hours for both sides). The chains are pretty good on these, I wouldn't be doing them just for the fun of it. (did you mean timing belt replacement!)

CV's - These were originally GKN so if you want OEM an inner + outer boot kit is about $100 but you can get cheaper aftermarket. The inner CV's are expensive (about $200 each) outer $100 each so if you're doing all 4 you can get exchange axles for about $200 complete with new CV's ready to go. (2-3 hours for both sides).

A set of front pads are like $100 for front 2 pad set and $140 for a 4 pad front set depending on which caliper you have. Brake fluid $20 (2 hours total)
Is the broken check valve hose part number 078145733G? If so, about $80. (15 minutes)
Prop output shaft seal 018409399B is about $30 genuine, half for aftermarket. (1 hour)
Not sure what the rear actuator seal is they quoted?

That reduces $4435 to about $600 (including beer!) and 1 saturday. (or a weekend but you need to budget for more beer!) None of this requires any tricks, 9I have done all of these and I am not a mechanic, just take your time (and maybe go easy on the beers till the end!).

Dealerships are so funny trying to make top dollar on these cars STILL!
I mean tho, cant blame them, people still take their 20 year old cars there. Ind'ys are probably better price- wise, but I wouldn't know... :-)
