Allroad Fan & Overheating Issue
Hello and thanks for any input.
I have a couple weird issues with the Audi. Wife drove to the store today. When she got back in car and started up, the Water Temp gauge maxed out and high temp warning beep/light came on. Oil temp seemed to be fine and she started to drive it home, she said the water temp started to go back to middle after she hit the road with some speed.
When she got home, I took a look and noticed the auxiliary electric fan (on passenger side) was not running at all, but not sure if it was supposed to be on. I checked fuses and everything seemed fine. The AC was running fine and cold. I shut the car off, then started it up, the water temp was maxed out and then after about 30 seconds, it quickly dropped all the way to minimum and doesn't move, as if it was completely malfunctioning.
Was wondering if I'm looking at a Coolant Temp Sensor issue or if the overheating maybe caused it to go bad? I've heard that the electric Aux fan shouldn't affect the water temp. I'm going to bleed the coolant tonight to see if that does anything. Also, need to run the heat at max to see if I get any heat there. Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Well, main cooling fan is now running, just had to turn on the AC. When I start the Allroad from cold, the water temp gauge is dead center, then it slowly rises to max, then flips quickly all the way to minimum, then again rises to max, then flips again back to minimum. Not sure if that is Thermostat opening and closing, or if that is faulty Coolant Sensor. I'm getting the 17704 fault on vagcom

You can test the sensor itself in Vag Com, by checking in measuring blocks for the coolant sensor. It should read close to ambient when the car has sat overnight.
You may also have an air pocket in the system.

Agree, it could be a faulty temp sensor as well. If you are getting 17704, in vagcom - you can check measure block 001 or 004 for coolant temp and perform an output test via HVAC (tab). I suspect a bad thermostat... take look here 17704/P1296/004758 - Ross-Tech Wiki
Good luck.
Good luck.

Great, thanks. I decided to replace the CTS since it's fairly simple and that seems to be the problem. Everything is back to normal on the temp gauge and the fans are also running as they should. I'm going to replace the timing belt and thermo/water pump as well in the next three months to avoid any more issues. Appreciate the help
