Anyone ever gutted the stock mufflers? If yes is it noise tolerable?

Performancepeddler.com has Magnaflow universal mufflers at pretty good prices.

I had a local shop do the bending and all said and done it sounds great for 300 bucks (w/parts). The tips need a little readjusting but they bigger magnaflows fill out the rear nicely.
No sense in messing around with the stock setup IMHO.
I can see if they havent thrown out my stock setup yet and ship it to you for cost if you'd like.

Did it three weeks ago. DO IT!
I did this mod a few weeks ago and was dumbfounded by the stock muffler design. I noticed a considerable increase in power with only a FAINT increase in sound levels. In fact, I was disappointed with the fact it didn't increase sound by more then a few percent.
Hope this helps.

That's exactly what I did, replaced mufflers with pipe and welded the tips back on

I cut the hangers off the stock mufflers and welded them onto the straight pipe also. Why go aftermarket when you can have this done for less than $200. My car looks stock and while the pics afaudi07 posted look nice, I was hesitent to replace the stock tips since I like their design (rolled edge). Though I did consider replacing them with same syle only larger dia. In the end I wanted a stealther look, so I left them as is.

Re: I'm in MN. Wouldn't take us that long to meet in the middle, eh?
I,m actually working in Spring, Texas. I live in Wadsworth, Il. I have no problem paying for the shipping. Let me know.

That's great, because I want that increase but I also like to keep it somewhat quiet. I just want to sound a little more throatier, like a FX35.

came across this old thread, but no info on what stock muffler internals look like. Here is 03 bel allroad rear muffler dissected. Looks like it's a dual stage muffler.
