Default C5 AR 2.7T Transmission Options

Hello All,

I recently picked up a 2005 C5 AR 2.7T with 117K. It's in great condition, everything so far has panned out as either well maintained or replaced as scheduled.

Since I am coming from the Subaru family back to the Audi family, I must say it's a pleasure to drive and fantastic inside.

So I do have a model # over the 024000 which, from what I have read, is when they changed the Torque Convertor with an updated model. I plan on changing out the tranny fluid soon just to check on the internals but I have no tranny issues currently.

My question is, I know everyone talks about swapping out the Tiptronic 5-speed for a manual 6-speed but will any of the newer 6 or 8 speed trannies bolt up? I know there might some VAGCOM issues but was wondering if there are any other options besides going to the 6-speed manual?

Good question!

I would like to have a taller final gear and drop the revs a bit on the highway, 3K is not bad but maybe I could get a little more MPG if I could drop it down a bit. One more gear would probably do the trick.....

Wow, nearly 200 views and I finally get one response. I figured someone one say just go with the 5sp AT or 6sp manual or buy a new car.

I have searched the net looking for wome info but haven't come across any yet.

Isn't the 2.7 the same at the 3.0? and the 3.0 seems to have some much better tranny options. I figure there might be some drivetrain length issues, chip, etc... but were there is a will there is a way.

There is NO option other than a 6mt.
I have bought 4 of them (pretty much the total number of ar's imported with the 6mt) and I still have 3 of them (totaled one). Well, I have 2; the other was a gift to my daughter and her husband.

IMHO, if you try to get into a newer 6/8speed auto, you will spend many moons in limbo while you figure out how to get the thing operable.

Good luck if you try it.

I'd think the electronics would be the hardest part, I have no idea how you would adapt that......it would take someone much smarter than me.

Did them make any turbo engined (6cyl) cars with a 6 speed auto box?

I did a TIP to 6MT swap. The differentials and everything have to be changed as well, but worth the swap. However, the final drive is still not where I'd like it. I want a taller final drive gear, which can be done. However, I have to re-evaluate the differentials and do more research before doing this.

The gearing in the AR, in general for TIP or 6MT, are just too low and not built for high speed. I'd be interested to do more research on the differentials and ratios used in the RS6 Avant 6MT. When my clutch goes or I need a re-build, which won't be for a year, I'll def. be experimenting with different ratios.

Sounds really interesting.
I have a complete drivetrain from a normal A6 2,7t to transplant some time.
The normal A6 has somewhat smaller wheels, also considering this and the bit different gearing ratio, 140km/h would result in around 3000 rpm in the 6th gear. (Yes, differential flanges will have to be changed, and my brand new OEM half axles as well because there is no levelling in the A6)
So, a normal MT from an A6 is already a longer gearing option than of the Tiptronic which has around 3650-3700 at 140km/h (3350 @ 130).

A longer 6th gearing would be more awesome. This biturbo engine delivers plenty of torque, capable to tackle with the mass of air drag due to the fenders, etc, especially with the upgraded 1 bar charged rate. I assume a 6th gear swap from a TDI V6 could be a very viable way to decrease rpm and improve MPG! The other 5 gears could remain unchanged. 6th gear would show up approx 2200-2400 rpm @ 130 with the OEM size wheels.
Anybody did this already?

BTW my Tiptronic was refurbished early this year, with new everything, further - a brand new OEM valve block. So I am not in a hurry.
