Default Dumb Question: How to turn on AC to load refrigerant?

Just pulled engine and put it back in. Had to pull AC hoses so the system is empty.
When I try to recharge refrigerant with a can and a gauged hose, it felt somehow clogged or shut. It reaches designated psi in only about 10 seconds.

I couldn't tell if the AC was on because it's got climate control I could only set it to a degree that's higher than current weather. Out door temperature is below 50 now. There's no way I could set it below 50 with climate control. There says Lo on screen, I assume this should keep AC fixed open, but it doesn't seem that way.

So, how do you tun on the freaking AC?

You wait to get hot outside

Otherwise you need two heat guns. One to heat up the front bumper outside temp sensor; the other to heat up the interior temp sensor located by the climate controls. I never tried it and I never would, but you seem impatient, so go for it

Good idea.
But I think I'll try a hair dryer or a halogen lamp instead of heat guns.
My heat gun could melt plastic in seconds.
Besides my extension cord only holds up 1000w.

Thanks.

Was the system evacuated after reconnecting the hoses?

Be sure the hose connector's valve core is working properly. As the refrigerant flows into the system (should follow quickly due to the vacuum in the system from the evacuation), the low pressure switch will allow the compressor to start.

Set the heater controls to defrost, this will allow the compressor to start once the system pressure is nice the low pressure cut out, regardless of the outside temperature. If the inside of the car is below freezing, the evaporator's temperature sensor will prevent the compressor from engaging to prevent icing. Run the heater to raise the temperature in the car.
