Default Engine Swap?

I have a 2004 allroad 4.2L That needs a new engine. I am going to try to find a low millage 2005 if it will fit. I would also Like to put one in out of a S4 if it will fit. Thanks in advance.

I know that all 4.2's in the allroad are the same over all the years. I'm not sure about the S4 engine though. I would imagine the chain driven 4.2 from the S4 would fit. I would look up the engine codes to see if the allroad and the S4 engines are the same.

For example, on the 2.7T the early ones were a APB and the later ones were a BEL. These are usually stamped on the engine block somewhere. Most times on one of the lifting points.

The V8's had engine codes of ARS, ASG, and BAS. I'm not sure what the allroad or the S4 came with.

The allroad 4.2 engine is BAS and the S4 is BBK or BHF. I don't see why they wouldn't be physically interchangeable with the exception of downpipes and some hoses. I don't know if there would be any electrical issues with the ECU.

What happened to the engine that it is not repairable? I would advise against putting in any used engine that you cannot hear and see run first, without at least cracking things open and checking the chain guides, cylinders, etc.

I'm not 100% sure what is wrong with it. The place I took it to is a good shop with lots of experience in small town usa. He is an honest guy. He is pretty sure that one of the timing chains broke and Fd up a bunch of stuff. He thought It would be cheaper to find a good used engine instead of rebuilding it. I havent decided what to do with it yet. Just weighing my options. I know one thing, If I do buy a used engine It will be getting new slack adjusters no mater what it sounds like.

Ideas what it would cost to rebuild? (excluding the pull and put back in)
