Default Instrument Cluster & Console Backlights Out

I'm new around here, but not to Audi (and Porsche).

Lately, my '01 Allroad has added out lights in the dash to its general post-100k naughtiness. When I turn on the headlights, the backlights on the dash and middle console are not coming on reliably. Sometimes they come on, sometimes if they do, they shut themselves back off.

As its both sections, I am thinking its the fuse -- but the seat heat, and other things on that fuse are working.

Any ideas?

fuse #5... but in my case it was a short in illumination that blew thyristor in cluster that regulates these lights.

The original fuse was good (have a tester) but we replaced it anyway -- as I feared, the lights are still out.

Would the next best guess be the bulbs behind the intstrument cluster and center console?

Also check the potentionmeter behind the brightness slider. If the wire behind it disconnected or it is broken, it will affected the back lighting.

Thank you, will do. We've decided to take it to the dealership for some other issues, so trying to decide if we check the lights now (about to do the cold start sensor) or when it goes in.
