Newbie Wheel Offset Question for winters
Hello All,
I have a 2013 Allroad that currently runs the sport option 19" tri-spoke wheels and Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT (P245/40 98Y). I cannot run these in the winter so I have decided on tires (I have tried them all at some point or another and have for a number of reasons tires are locked. I recognize my choice are not 'the best' in deep snow but I don't run in deep snow much, and that's when I drive the wife's Yukon if I have to). Likely, the wheels I will be getting are decided as well.
Offsets are driving me a bit nuts and where I hope some experience can be tapped into here.
I will likely be running on BBS SR wheels (using the model recommendation from TireRack). For some reason I am not getting to a point of comfort on offsets - usually hasn't been an issue but I seem to be getting somewhat conflicting information from the usual suspects. Audi USA has a winter tire micro site where they recommend a winter set that has 17 x 7.5 ET28 wheels running 225/55 tires. Local dealers here in the Toronto area all present similar downsize options and the manual also has 17" as a viable wheel option. Local dealers don't have stock to check just yet and they are oblivious to the offset (actually the dealer I got the car from thinks it is a 47ET?!) as they come in pre-mounted and they just aren't that into stuff like offsets - hmmm.
I no issues with 17" as I prefer going to a tall, skinner tire for all of the known winter benefits....everything is good. TireRack recommends a 35 ET offset on the 17 x 7.5 BBS SR (and virtually every other wheel they put on an Allroad configuration). I think I will go to a 235/55 tire as it matches revs the closest while giving me 1.5" more sidewall and better dry/wet performance than a 225.
So, my question to those out there running 17" wheels - What offset are you running and how do they fill out the wheel wells? As to the obvious question of why not just go with the Audi option - I have had multiple bad experiences with the brand of tire they are going to use this year and I want to go to a painted/anthracite coloured wheel to cut down on brake dust guilt in the winter - I hate washing wheels so often in the winter. In the end I can get better tires and the ones I want, the wheels I want in a colour I like and I can do it for about 35% less. No brainer - except for making sure I get the right %$#@$#@ offset so they look and perform right.
To save the us all time, I really am not looking for tire or wheel recommendations so lets not get a tire / wheel brand bash / pitch going here. Thanks.

Well, thanks for the reads at least. I will answer my own question as in the end I just had to sit down and do the math. Thanks to Gary at TireRack for confirming my math. For anyone else contemplating similar, I am going with the ET35 BBS with P235/55/17. In the end, offset differential will minimal. Tires and wheels are on the way....mounting on the car will hopefully still be a few months away.

235/55/17 will make your tires 1/2" taller than stock...speedo off a little and a little loss in pulling torque.

OEM factory 17's are 17" x 7.5", 5 Lug, 112mm Bolt Pattern 25mm Offset and 225/55/17 tires. ...25mm gives it a wide stance and easily clears the air springs.
