REALLY bad gas mileage... What do you get for mileage?
Hello all,
I am out of ideas of why I am getting such bad gas mileage in my car. With gas prices at $4 I really would like to figure out what is going on.
First I have a 2002 with a tip. I drive 100 miles a day, 95 highway, 5 city. The mileage indicator says I am getting 17-17.5 by the end of the tank. I calculate 16.75 with setting the trip set and topping off. I get about 260 miles to a tank. (so that is $65 every 2.5 days) I go 70-80 on the highway on cruise and rarely push it.
I have been getting the poor mileage since I purchased the car. (61k) It now has 93K. I have no check engine lights.
I just had the spark plugs changed, new k&n filter, timing belt etc. done, good highway tires well inflated with no luck.
Any ideas? I am getting killed on gas...
what kind of gas mileage are other people getting?

Seems about right. I have the same ar and would not expect anything better at 70 to 80MPH. I bought a 2007 4 cylinder Accord for the trips I do not need the cargo space. The miles per gallon doubled :-)

I found that if you keep the speed to 65-70, you will get the best gas mileage. But that is hard to do with such a capable car. Over 70, and approaching 80 the mileage drops off quick. I usually average about 15 mpg mixed driving, and maybe 17 mpg highway if I'm going 75 or more. I got 20 mpg once when I kept the speed to under 70. The low gearing of the allroad means high rpm's when cruising the highway, which burns more gas.

wow so I am not getting bad gas mileage?
I was reading around some more and some people get 20ish mpg.''
I just read something where someone cleaned MAF? bad egt? (I don't know what egt is) Fuel Filter?
are those things that would help? the dealer told me I don't need to change the fuel filter.

Cheapest solution:
Leave 15 minutes early every day and drive a little slower.
At 80mph, the air is much harder to slice through than at the pace of 60.
Yes, it might cut into time spent at home or work or whatever, but drive slower, fill car every 3 days instead of 2.5 days.
Save gargantuan amounts of money.

It seems the mileage is all over the place. I put some seafoam in my tank to clean up the engine. lets see if that helps. I also think I am going to clean the MAF.
I read up about it here...
http://hubpages.com/hub/clean-replace-vw-audi-maf-diy
a can of crc MAF cleaner is 7.69 and advanced auto parts + 20% off using code p20.
It can't hurt I will report my findings.
