Btw, the SoundAbout user interface isn't the friendliest, but it gets the job done in a raw but effective sort of way. 'Media Audio' is the applicable setting you're looking for. Set it to 'Let App Decide' to play notifications via Bluetooth/MMI or 'Speaker' to play them through the phone's internal speaker. Haven't played much with the other settings.

The thing is that notifications are considered media so when you have bluetooth connected, the sound will only be available when you are actually listening to bluetooth media. Doesn't matter what car you use.
As you've noticed, the only way for you to hear the notifications is if you route it through your phone speakers. Instead of using an app, just disable the media option under your bluetooth settings. You aren't using it anyway and would still allow you to get calls through bluetooth.
