Working Video Formats for MMI 3G+
I just tried bunch of different video types and sizes on my 2011 A8L. The following video files work.
AVI, MPG, and MP4
Maximum screen size for video to work was 720 x 404 at 24, 29.97, and 30 FPS. I was also successful in playing 640 x 360 resolution video at above frame rates. Frame rates of 48 and 60 FPS did not play at these resolutions. Higher resolution including 800 x 450 and 854 x 480 did not play at any frame rate.
I used the following parameters with very good results.
Video
AVC (h264) codec
Resolution of 720 x 404 (1,500 kbps) or 640 x 360 (1,000 kbps)
Match frame rate to source (24 fps or 30 fps)
Audio
AAC 128 kbps
2 Channel Stereo
44.1 KHz Sampling
This resulted in files sizes of ~10 MB/min for 720 x 404 resolution and ~7.5MB/min for 640 x 360 resolution.
I used a freeware called iWisoft Video Converter on Windows PC. It is really easy to use and will transcode just about any video files.

I managed to get 720x480 working in mp4 format with mpeg4 codec.
Video Bit Rate: 12000
Video Frame Rate: 30FPS
Audio Codec: aac
Audio Bit Rate: 320
Sample Rate: 48000
Audio Channel: 2
There was only a little bit of picture cut from the side and top but it filled most of the screen.
I don't understand why it wont accept 800x480 since that is the screen resolution...any ideas?

So i have a 2012 C7 A6 Prem+ and i unlocked VIM with OBDeleven (vag-com alternative) and i found software verified will convert and play.
Free Video Converter, Any Video Converter Freeware: Convert any video to MP4/WMV/MP3 for mobile devices
simple to use just import the video and in the output drop down you pick what format. Ive found the Mpeg-1 Movie and Mpeg-2 Movie and mp4 work, though the mpegs work the best as far as resolution and fitment.... just thought id share for those still trying to get this working

No the MMI will play, but once you get to 5mph then the video will cut out. If you have VAGCOM or another type of interface you can unlock the unit and change the speed from 5mph to 200mph (or whatever you want the video to shut off at) so itll play while driving (for passengers only of course) do quick search for VIM (video in motion)
