The father said
"I would have expected them to take their car keys". Ummmm no. That never happens. If a bar tried to take my car keys I would have walked out and NOT DRIVEN HOME. It is the bars responsibility to cut someone off if they have had too much to drink , but at Lake Joe you could be staying there (ie walking back to a cabin) or driving. How does the bar know if you intend on driving home?

Dad's words...
However, Mulcahy said he does not think closing a bar or restaurant is the solution. He does support "zero blood (alcohol) level for new drivers until (age) 21-25, and zero tolerance (for) speeding infractions to age 21. In both those cases I feel the licence should be revoked and every kid will really think before drinking or speeding when driving," he said.
So is he trying to shift the blame to the system that is failing when he could have just taken the keys away from his son given his driving record?? Parents gotta take some responsibility also.

I think you're misquoting him.
The actual quote is:
"In retrospect, it is obvious I would've wanted the Joe Club to take away the keys or stop serving, (if in fact Tyler and the kids were intoxicated - I assume he/they were)."
He's not saying they should have taken the keys away and that he's blaming them. IMO, he's saying that thinking back, it's obvious that if they would have taken the keys, my son would be alive.

I think you're reaching.
It doesn't sound like he's blaming anyone else or abdicating the responsibility of the individual. It sounds like he's saying with tougher laws, these situations may be prevented.

I think some & much lies with the parents, but most lies with the kids.
How much stupid $hit did you do between 15-25 that your parents would have or did beat on you for...and how many times did you still do it? And if you still did it, should your parents have been on the hook for your idiodacy?
Up to age 10, certainly, age 15, certainly, age 18, a little less, > age 20, not much.

Ironic then that people here seem to be jumping up and down against passing the
buck to the restaurant (which I agree with), but are quick to pass the buck to the parents.
