The A4 is not liking this cold weather....
Woke up to -42 this morning and the car fired right up but then started to protest...the heater fan began squealing like crazy after a few minutes of driving and is now doing it almost all the time, my sun roof guides started to go in the fall but I haven't had any problems with the common rattle associated with the guides failing until today, it sounded like there was a jackhammer in my headliner!! I also noticed that a few of my dash lights decided to burn out, at least three maybe more . The final straw was when I went to get out of the car and the door handle broke! After climbing out the passenger side, I was happy to discover that the outside handle still works so now I have to roll down my window and let myself out with the outside handle!
Poor car, it's in serious need of TLC but it's going to have to wait until some warmer weather...

start using the block heater anywhere below -10C...
No reason you can't use it at 0C. Pick up one of those outdoor timers, program it to come on 2 hours before you plan to leave in the morning.
You can start an engine at any temp without the block heater... but having it pre-warmed helps prevent cold-temp wear.

Going to be a Phillips & Temro block heater...
since they make just about all of the block heaters out there.
Look up your appropriate one here:

Or call the dealership... or Canadian Tire. If you go to CTC, you may have to physically go up to the counter and have them look it up in their computers. They don't keep all of them out on the shelves.
Either install yourself if you're comfortable removing a frost-plug... or have a shop install it.
Installed properly, they require zero maintenance. My first '88 90q had a block heater when I got it... never leaked. My dad's old '78 Ford F150 has a block heater that never leaks. If they are installed properly, they should never leak.
