Default It gets pretty damn cold in northern Finland and Sweden +

and they don't excatly have diesel problems!

The older type diesel may have been problematic from time to time, but all one had to do was put a bit of normal gas into the tank.
The gas would act like anti-freeze.

You are correct, otoh, about the cost factor.
If the car manufacturers keep asking for a substantial premium over gas powered models, and if the cost of diesel at the pump is relatively high (as it currently is), then the economics may not there.
Diesel make a whole lot of sense if you keep the vehicle for a long period. Whether they make sense for seven years or not is something one has to think very hard.
Apparently, Canadians on an average keep their cars for seven years - I read it somewhere.

Diesel in Europe is becoming very expensive - in some places it's much costlier than gas.
Hasn't happened yet, but I see people there moving to gas powered small cars - 1 litre to 1.3 litre capacity. Beyond that, diesels begin to make more sense there.

Default Can you imagine the cost premium of a diesel-hybrid Audi?

Be more than you can EVER imagine!!!
Wouldn't be out of line much to say a diesel hybrid A3 would cost 30-40% more than an equvalent gas powered model.
Why?
Simply because they can!
Oh, I forgot the US-CDN dollar exchange rate there...add another 30%.

Default Diesels will not work economically in our market because gasoline is so cheap

and the demand for diesel and jet fuel/ home heating oil (the other two big components in a barrel of oil) is very high here due to the distances we travel. You get X amount of gasoline wehn you get Y amount of diesel and jet fuel without much chance to vary the proportions. Originally, gasoline was awaste byproduct of refining oil to get kerosene which is pretty much diesel and jet fuel. So, with our diesel based transport industry don't count on diesel over here. If there is ever a fuel shortage those dummies who buy diesel aren't going to get much fuel on their ration card, the truckers will get most of it and the airlines the rest.

Default A lot of people here talk the talk, but how many would actually pay a premium...

in order to to get a slower car? When it came to voting with their wallets, I doubt that many here would step up.

Default Personally I wouldn't call it slow...

But I know a lot of people would say otherwise. According to Audi's german website, the A4 avant 3.0TDI quattro with a six speed manual will get up to 100kmh in 6.3 seconds. Take off a few tenths of a second for the sedan. And the numbers from Audi are always a bit conservative.

What will happen is that the cost of the diesel will make this a bit out of reach for some, including myself. While I like the idea of the diesel and the ability to get a lot better range on a single tank of diesel, I'll most likely look at the 2.0T again - I think it's probably the best bang for the buck.

Default That 3.0DTI is a very nice engine, but God knows what kind of premium they'll charge for it...

if it ever came here. My guess is it would slot just below the new S4. Here's a pdf of the UK brochure I picked up in London last week. As you can see from their price lists, the increase over the 3.2 is minimal. That won't be the case here unfortunately.

Default No problem at all. There's a PDF of it in my post below...

but it's a little blurry. It's much nicer to have a shiny hard copy.
