how necessary are dedicated winter tires for a quattro audi??
The reason I'm asking is that this will be my first winter in my B5 S4. I currently have Pilot Sport A/S tires on the car and have been searching for some used winter tires without much luck. I am now wondering if it's even necssary to put dedicated winters on since quattro should help a lot.
Any comments from those who've gone through past winters??

Keep in mind the following facts:
- What Jerry D mentioned already.
- All season tires harden up & loses traction capability at a significantly warmer temperature than winter tires.
If I have to choose between a 2WD/snow tire car & a AWD/all season tire car, I'll take the 2WD.

Snows all the way
You need all the grip you can get when turning and braking. Especially with a quattro as our cars are heavier than a non-quattro, mind you, both are just heavy in general!
Had the ContiSport all seasons for a while (while I was in the process of getting snows) and boy to they suck. Braking was mediocre along with turning. Of course, you do need to use a bit of common sense when it comes to winter driving and also a good understanding in what your tires can do and cannot do in winter (ie.: go to an empty snow-covered parking lot and play around with it while avoiding things like light posts, sidewalks, dividers, etc.!)

Think its pretty obvious, get a set of winters. You will regret it if you dont.
The price of a set of rims/tires is much less than fixing a front end or suspension after sliding into something or a curb.

It's similar to buying a Porsche and putting Motomaster all seasons. They'll get you through...
...but you're leaving alot of its capabilities on the table.
I thought Visti had snows he wanted to get rid of.
