OT : looking for a 40" LCD...have found a sony Bravia KDL-40V4100 40" LCD TV - is $900 a good price?

In most cases I would prefer the Sony but at that price range, get the Samsung A530
I saw both TV's side by side and played with the settings at FS and strongly preferred the Samsung at this price range.
Was researching for a neighbour friend of mine that is looking for a 40" LCD.
Best price I have found is $900 (from $1099 at FS) from my buddy the store manager at 2001 Audio Video...

yeah the 550, or you might see the panny 50" 720p plasma for about 1k.
To really benifit from 1080p you need to sit real close to a 40" like 5 feet close. Further than that back and the 720p looks the same. I know the extra 10" of screen makes a substantial difference overal. Check it out before dismissing.

Well, I disagree strongly with you on the 50" Panny.
If you want the same picture quality as the 40" Samsung on a 50" Panny then you need to spend more that $1k.
The larger the screen size, the more you need to spend to equal the picture of the smaller sets has always been a golden rule.
