Lol, you're right - not that they ever were that cool...
Thankfully, my wife is too logical, and finds it a huge pain in the a$$ to get the kids in and out of an SUV, loves the sliding doors on the van.
I have friends who are too cool to be seen driving a minivan - it doesn't bother me. I love the van with the family, and besides . . . my other cars are cool enough!

Doesn't get much more official than this...
search for 2009 model year and you'll find that about half of all tested SUVs have a 4 star roll over rating and 5 star impact rating. I think all premium SUVs have 4 star rollover. Oh and take a look at the rating for 2009 BMW 3 and 5 series.

http://www.safercar.gov

Toyota Sienna has a 4 star rollover rating (same as SUVs) and really doesn't have
any advantages over an SUV. Its major disadvantage (in my eyes) is the way it looks. Don't get me wrong, its a great car but I prefer the look and feel behind the wheel of the Q7 to that of the sienna. It comes down to personal preference. There are no REAL advantages to owning either and Sienna is not that much cheaper, but both are definitely better for me than a large sedan.
