Default Confused newbie needs research

Hi all. New guy looking to get an early rally car era but I can't figure out the details of the models. Can someone point me in the right direction for the early quattro models?

What years did the coupe come to America?
I read the engine changed about 3 times. And different in Europe and US. Is the 20v the one I want?
Is that engine the best one?
Is it 2.0 or larger?
Was that the largest engine?
Did it come in turbo?
Would I want the turbo?
What's the last year they made the body style? (coupe 2 door)
Was it called something different in US than Europe?
What was the successor to the rally models?

Wiki has been weak on specifics of US models and what the models were named. (every time I Google quattro I keep getting new models instead of the '80s models). I could find some info but not complete enough to make an informed decision.

So, can an expert out there set me straight on the specifics and where I could find more info? I'd like to build my own rally car (originals are 200-300k!). I'm not going to rally it. I just like those models/style with the biggest engine (5 cyl 2.0? Turbo?) and manual trans.

Thanks for all your help!
