I found another B5S4 with K04's but had a question about SMOG
The car has AWE's kit and I'm concerned about the manifolds that come with the kit passing the visual inspection. I did a CARFAX report and it shows the car failing on 5-08 and 11-08. The guy said he just had is inspected and it passed. I'm concerned I have to take it to a "special" inspection to get it to pass. I'm meeting with the owner later today and will ask him about it but I was wondering if anyone knew about the manifolds.<ul><li><a href="http://www.awe-tuning.com/pages/gallery/awe_rsk04/index.cfm">AWE's K04 kit</a></li></ul>

If you have the engine covers on how can you see the manifolds ?
You'd have to pull out the coolant reservoir or the airbox in order to really notice that.
Smog visuals are pretty casual, just look for the obvious stuff e.g. air intake. I know of a B5 S4 that passed with an APR BiPipe, ASP Ceramic coated Stainless Manifolds, RS6 Turbos, Piggied DP's and a ....load of other mods.

Chances are it wasn't the AWE kit that made it fail. It was probably the downpipes.
I had Labrees on my Imola, they passed. I transferred them over to my Avant and they didn't pass when I got it smogged for sale. So I had to put gutted stockers. So it may just be the 2nd cats not getting warm enough.
If he got it to pass then you shouldn't have to worry about a thing. It's his, as the seller, responsibility.
They MIGHT question the MAF tho. Manis, highly doubtful as they are hidden well.

The cats were shot and have been replaced. It's now running unbelievably clean. Question..
I did a 6th gear pull on the highway at about 60. Once the turbo's spooled it pulled hard, had a drop in boost and bogged for a split second and then was back on. I didn't notice it as I was going through the gears, only on low RPM hard pulls. Is that normal?

It's a GIAC car right?
Yep, I've worked on 3 cars that had that. Never had an issue with it in a Stg 3 car tho. Could be any number of things:
1. BPV's
2. TBB
3. Code (which is what it did on the other cars I mentioned. Maybe that Stg 3 code he has is older and needs a reflash)
4. It's an S4. Is it silver? If so...that's the problem! :-) (kidding...silver S4's are a jinx)
Honestly...could be any number of things. Logging it would be best. But without driving it there is no way to tell. Code would be my guess.

Yes it is. It's a 2000 with 33K on it and I'm sure it has an older code.
....and yes it's silver, HA. It has an older stage 3 kit and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have the AWE fueling kit. I have a feeling it needs the fueling kit and an updated code.
Boost appeared to be hitting +/- 22 PSI and leveling off around 17. I'm getting it checked out on Monday morning so we'll see what the story is.
The sucker pulls like a freight train though. I like the instant torque of the 4.2 but once the 2.7T spools it's gone.
A short shift kit is a must though. The throws seem really long.
