Default Infineon HPDE crash...

I was at the NASA HPDE event this past weekend at Infineon and on Sunday there was a really bad crash. A car going up T1 went off track and started flipping after hitting the dirt. It went high enough to wind up in the grandstands!! Jaws of Life tools had to be used to get the driver out, but I'm hearing he's "ok" (he's a Russell Racing School instructor, but I'm not sure who).

Default Woa, uphill too! What's with all the track incidents recently?

There was a Nissan 350Z at Mid Ohio a few months ago that:
- flipped over a long gravel trap (it barely touched the ground),
- up &amp; over the tire barrier
- over a retaining fence
- continued to flip, and
- over another fence...
and finally came to rest in spectator area. Luckily there weren't any spectators there. The driver walked away, literally.

And this past wkend at Summit Point Raceway (West Virgina, 1 hr west of Dulles airport outside of DC), a Time-Trail S-2000 at a NASA event supposedly had mechanical prob, blew past end the of the front straight &amp; hit an unpadded concrete wall. Sad news is that the driver is in a coma and likely won't make it.

Be careful out there everyone...

Default I heard that it may have been a mechanical failure. The car did not turn in at 1 and the driver

was heard to be talking about that as he was taken away.

Default That's what I heard as well...

I think these grandstands are the ones just around the hill to the right as you go towards T1, so the car must of just gone straight and hit that hill to end up over there.

Default Here's the NASA link...(update)

Nothing to stop you once your on the in field. I agree with the NASA comments should be a tire wall.<ul><li><a href="http://www.nasaforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&amp;t=24705">http://www.nasaforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&amp;t=24705</a</li></ul>

Default Wow! I've had hundred and hundreds of laps and never even looked over there...

... mainly as my eyes were always craning to look up the hill to T2. That is crazy!

On the Google image in the link, they did have a wall up at one point, but it is an old image (Audi pavilion half done). I'm sure thier lawyers will suggest something there. However, it also needs to allow for run off for AMA using the chicane... so probably a tire wall against the hill.

Glad every one was ok-ish.<ul><li><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=Infineon,+CA &amp;sll=39.345294,-120.173003&amp;sspn=0.60694,0.426407&amp;g=Truckee ,+CA,+USA&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;t=h&amp;ll=38.16191,-122.456727&amp;spn=0.002332,0.002886&amp;z=

Default that was lap 4 of the NASA Group A race in the afternoon.....

the track was red-flagged for at least 20 minutes and then we all exited while they removed the driver.

Infineon should have had a tire wall/k wall/barrier before that berm. They usually do, not sure why it was removed (motorcycle races?).

Very scary situation, I am glad that nobody was seriously injured.

NOTE: an Infineon Security person drove around the track and was taking people's cameras away from them to be retrieved at a later time. Is that legal?

They have a wall up there for the IRL weekend. Not sure about NASCAR.
