Default Extendable Sun Visor

I have a 2014 Q5 TDI and miss having my extendable sun visor from my 2006 outback XT. I thought I read that an Audi Q5 possibly 2012 or older had a passenger & drive side extendable sun visor? Is this true? How hard would it be to try to buy one if audi sells them and install it?

If you've ever driven with an extendable visor you would know what I mean when I say it us more useful than you could imagine!

I agree. That's my wife's only complaint about ours. I keep the seat all the way back, so when the sun is coming in from the side, forget about it. Might as well get some horse blinders.

+1 likely our biggest complaint. Here in Texas we get a lot of sun. Spent a number of years in Germany, though, so I understand that the engineers there really don't need to worry about the sun much....

That's odd, our 2010 S-line has them.

I just checked, and our '13 P+ has them on both sides.

I guess s-line has it but not the 2014 base "premium plus"... Do you guys also have the flap down in the middle between both shades? My old 2003 mercedes 300E and my audi 2002 a4 1.8t had the flap down piece not the extended shades.

Wonder if I can upgrade the shades? Where do I find the part info?

S-Line doesn't change the visors, and I don't have S-Line anyway, just a normal P+ TDI with nav, sport and B&O.

Sadly the third visor was killed somewhere along the line -- I had that in my 2002 Passat and it was the coolest thing ever. However, I haven't really noticed myself missing it in the Q5 (though I really missed in in my Odyssey), likely due to there being other stuff on the windshield helping to block that little bit of sun.

@idale... So you have a 2014 TDI right? Your car doesn't have the extended visor right? I've got the same setup as you... No extended visor.

No, my visors do pull out. So unless ELEVENS and I are just misunderstanding what you're wanting, you should have it too.... (Since you mention having an A4 before, it'd be the same: pull and the visor slides along the arm. It's not one that has a piece that pulls out from the visor itself to make the visor itself longer.)

This won't be the first time I've gone out to the garage to check on something I read about here...BRB...

Alright dammit...that makes the coin holder, ratcheting console cover, and now the visor.
If it wasn't for these forums, I would probably have to RTFM.

When I asked the stealer about why the car doesn't have that pull-down sun flap in between the visors, I was told that the sunglasses holder is used for that. Functional, sure, but not exactly elegant. It works.

The expandable visor is one feature of my previous Mazda CX-9 that I miss.

The Audi visors can be confusing. Most brands have a flap in the visor that pulls out to make them wider. The Audi has no flap, no visible sign of anything "special". But the entire visor slides "back" after you have swung it around to the side window.

So, it is a moveable visor, not an "extendable" one. Very easy to look at the whole visor and not see any hint that, duh, you would PULL it back to move it. Visors just don't normally work that way. Except Audi.

I'd give them extra points for being clever, if they covered the airbag message nonsense label on my visor with a simple "PULL ==>>" label instead.

Anyone got some beige fabric to hide that distracting label nonsense?

Does anybody else have visors that won't stay in position? I've had mine replaced, but the new ones also slowly continue to move away from the windshield lowering the line of site from the driver's position. Very frustrating.

Haven't seen that, but since they are "friction fit" that makes sense. You could monkey around with them, try sliding them over and then using alcohol to clean any lubricant off the metal rod. If they still slide down, become a horribly evil and unreasonable customer and just say "REMAKE!"

Could be they changed a parts supplier or something and the friction fit just isn't fricting properly.

And VW (of course), and my Odyssey was like that, too. Don't remember if my wife's old RSX had that, but that thing was so cheap that I bet you were lucky if you could turn the visor to the side window. So it's not only Audi (or VAG) doing it, at least.

Personally I think that the shiftable visor is better as it lets you move the whole visor into a better position instead of hoping a much-smaller pull-out tab gets the offensive bit of sun. For me, at least, I haven't ever wished that the visor was longer, I just need to pull it out since it's not blocking where I need it when the sun's on the side of the car.

I had a 2014 Q7 as a loaner and it did have the extendable sun visor which was nice. It also had the "sun glass" holder as we have in our Q5's... While not necessary it was nice to see the extended sun visor which I do miss from both my 2002 A4 and my 2006 Subaru Outback XT. Wish we had them in the Q5.
