So I started running Fuelly. with 97% highway average is 18mpg, with 273 miles logged. Gonna do a SF to LA trip and see if its any better.

At first glance, 18 mpg seems a bit low with pure hwy driving, but then you're in the bay area... you could be on the hwy but stuck in major bumper-to-bumper traffic.

You guys must drive pretty hard. I live in a fairly congested part of town, daily work run of 8 miles each way and I have averaged 23mpg over the last 6 months.

There will of course be differences based on area, traffic, elevation, terrain, etc., but "which gallons" makes a pretty big difference.

One thing to keep in mind is US vs. Imperial gallons. US gallons are a bit smaller (~82%), so we'd show lower MPG figures when compared to elsewhere. Not sure which gallons you guys use there, but assuming it's Imperial then 23mpg (Imperial) is about 19mpg (US).

Well all right then. Just wanted to throw the caution out there just since there'll be a difference especially in regions like the UK where they'll use "miles per gallon" but it's the other gallon so numbers will be bigger (about 25% higher, so a pretty big difference). Would cause confusion comparing the two.

Wife's commute is 23 miles each way. We're less than a mile from the freeway on our end and her office is less than a mile from the freeway on the San Francisco end. She average 24-25 mpg on I-280 and about 6-7 on that dreaded "last mile" to her job, for an average of 20-22 (depending on winter or summer gas).
