The uninformed employee at the parts desk tells you the dipstick doesn't exist.

The team of engineers who designed the engine tell you it's optimal to put in 91 octane fuel.

Same thing? Nope.

Vell, I am greatly surprised that the marketing and legal teams allowed you to havce any contact with the engineers. They told me that was strictly verboten, that the engineers are not even allowed to place or answer outside phone calls without armed supervision.

Like most corporate policies at most corporations these days.

And that of course is ignoring how or why "optimal" has been designated. To a conservationist, "optimal" use of a swamp includes preserving alligator habitat. To a hungry man in the swamp, "optimal" means eating the alligators and draining it!

Huh?
As in, "optimal" has no real meaning without a context.
And I would be surprised if actual engineers were allowed unfettered comment.

Everybody who owns an Audi has contact with the engineers. Just look in your glove box, they call it a User's Manual.

So you think the engineers broke into the assembly plant and left their own personal thoughts on some billy do in there? And no one else caught it?

Thanks, I'll believe the combustion engineer I knew directly.

Engineers may have been the starting point of the document. But after Marketing, Finance, and Legal got done with the reviews, the final version may be nothing like what the engineers envisioned.

"But after Marketing, Finance, and Legal got done with the reviews"
Heheh. I knew one "major global corporation" that always, always, put every equipment "brochure" through more than 50 revisions, for that precise reason. And that's just the revisions after the copywriting staff had approved the "final" draft and sent it into print production. God only knows how many revisions it went through before it got to the production department, where changes cost dearly.

What did Marshall McLuhan say? About the power of the printing press, belonging to the man who owned one?
