Accord... just no
Why not your beloved Golf and just switch to snows in the winter? I'm telling you, a solid set of winter tires on even a FWD car is >> AWD with all-seasons. I've been through some pretty rough Chicago winters doing just that.
Although I have never owned one, the Subaru doesn't seem like a bad suggestion either if a test drive doesn't show you giving up too much in terms of driving dynamics.
Have Fun!

VW golf's almost have a cult like following. To me they are just down right ugly!!!! I would drive a used accord any day over the nicest Golf R out there.

Personally, I'm not 100% sold on the Golf, but I do get it. There are just so few lower cost, small hatches based on solid platforms that maintain a healthy dose of good driving characteristics: Golf, Focus....hmm, yep that's it.

Subaru
stay away from the WRX/Sti and they're usually not beat on at all. Or go for the WRX which is more fun, but likely modified, and beat on ….

I only thought about his two requirements. The manual transmission and AWD. I am thinking he just wants a point A to point B car. Impreza would be perfect. Cheap car!! Stick and AWD. One of those you don't care if it gets a rock chip or a fender bender in the snow.

Man, this is weird, because you guys have like all the ideas that are going in my head... :
Step 1 : Look at used 993 4
Step 2 : Look at new GTI
Step 3 : Look at new Mini
Step 4 : Look at new WRX....or even base 5-door Impreza (so dumb no 5-door WRX)
I'll have a look at Audi Allroad and the TT. This is not a bad idea...
Step 19 : Read on the VW Golf Sportwagen. Might come AWD / Manuel in Canada....that would be the perfect fit I think. I'd get the cheapest AWD version and buy aftermarket 18inchers.
