Well I thought you were talking budget car but it does not sound like budget for your second car. In that case get another Audi, A3/4/5/6 or even a Porsche Macan (4 WD).
Throw the budget stuff out like the Hondas and Subarus because the driving experience is not even close. Those cars will get boring very quickly and then you will wish you spent the extra money to upgrade to an Audi.

Well, I am on a budget. A GTI would be ok...wrx too.
A base Audi A4 is a stretch.
I prefer not having another luxury car brand. The image it would send to people, to my neighbours etc...

Yeah, but you looked at a Porsche! Not many cars these days have AWD and manual transmissions, except the ones you mentioned and a few others (mostly German). An old Allroad with a manual can be found but are rare and likely needing a bit of repairs. What about an older 3 series? (e46 330XI, e90 330xi or 335xi)

He thought about an older one, not a shiny new one, so it's a little different message. Not the most practical thing in the world, though, and you'd need to be concerned with whether it's been taken care of or only enough to get by and you're in for maintenance headaches.
A6 allroad would be pretty big, may as well just drive the SQ5 at that rate.
Should find a 335xd, assuming they exist in the older guises. That 35d engine's very similar to the VAG 3.0 TDI and would be a hell of a beast in a small sedan (or wagon, but for a 335xd wagon to exist would be asking too much). Diesels usually command a premium on the used market, though, so along with being rarer it might be more costly to buy (might be made up for in running costs, but I've no idea of the fuel and maintenance costs to even guess).
