Default Help with your sunshade replacement ideas

Hi - I recently purchased a 2010 Q5 PP with the pano sunroof. No warranty, but when I inspected the car it looked practically new with almost no signs of use, as if the previous owner barely touched it. Interior looks new and the exterior has the slightest signs of road rash with only 2 dents. Odd as it may sound I think it's almost indistinguishable from a 1 month old car. New tires, new brakes all around and new front rotors. Religiously maintained at the dealership (I did not buy the car from the Audi dealer though). I guess Audi owners take really good care of their cars!

I've only had one issue, when I got the car the sunshade was sagging a little bit, nothing major, but after opening the sunroof/sunshade 4-5 times it got stucked and the front right corner came loose. I took it to the Audi dealership and they told me the only solution was to buy a new sunshade for $1300 - for reasons no one can explain they pull the whole right side out while inspecting the shade, so I decided to pull the whole thing out. Their explanation was, "it was already damaged".

A third party specialized shop quoted me $600 for the job if I supply the shade (about $400 with shipping).

Has anybody had this happened to? Dealer says this is pretty normal, especially in very hot climates, but after searching the forum for the past week or so I've not seen anybody mentioning anything.

I tinted the sunroof with 40 Crystalline, which is great, but you can still feel some heat and the glare is pretty bad (especially at midday). I hope this doesn't affect the sunroof as I've read some suggest tinting can cause the sunroof to crack. Average temp here is 85f and never dips below 65f.

Since the actual plastic shade is in excellent condition and before spending $1000 replacing the shade, I was thinking maybe I could make a frame (similar to a window screen) and slide it underneath the sunroof. Do you have any suggestions what materials to use to make the frame? I really want the shade to be as taut as possible.

Any other suggestions?

Over 7,500 downloads of my PDF with instructions, only twice Thanks, I don't understand people who get help or information why it's hard for them to click on Thanks/Like, it doesn't cost anything.

It's the same with updating maps and firmware, which cost dealers over $ 800 I received over 200 requests for the same.
If nothing else you need to appreciate the time and effort spent on help or information (example of a 20 GB folder uploaded on a server)

A bit disappointing, not only in my case but also with a couple of other active members who help other forum members with their information

Of course none of us are on the forum because of that but I don't understand what the problem is with clicking Thanks / Like

I wouldn't worry about the Crystalline cracking the sunroof. I had mine installed by a 3M "premier" dealer and he said he's never seen or heard of it. There have been issues with some Audi glass shattering on it's own from intense cold, apparently the glass was tempered incorrectly, and that could be a problem in heat as well. Not from the tint--but from bad glass. If it hasn't happened yet it probably won't. And if the glass were to shatter, the Crystalline film would keep it intact and out of your eyes and face.

I have similar problem with my 2009 Q5. Had some chairs in the boot and must have accidentally knocked the roof when getting them out. The screen will not roll back. I've just tucked the back in, as have played myself, but unable to fix. Not sure if I want to spend $1000 to repair...
Have started trawling for some DIY help first.
If I get it fixed will have to remember to open the screen when transporting bulky things in the boot,. Have never had an issue before and have transported kids bikes many times.

Can I please gen instructions for removing/replacing sunshade? I have 2012 A3. I want to sew an opaque cloth onto the top side of the factory sun shade. I will find a UV reflective cloth that is thin enough to not affect roll up/down of factory shade.

Thank you!

I would expect any additional layer of cloth to jam the roller.

Instead of messing with that, why not have a transparent window film applied to the glass? Something like a 3M Crystalline, which blocks almost 100% of all UV and IR light without making any real visible change in the glass.
