Improving Bang and Olufsen Stereo

AFAIK, Bose applies heavy equalization to most of their audio systems (if you can even call it that). They bump up the midbass which to an untrained ear may sound impressive, but all it does is just creates huge unnatural spikes and valleys in the frequency spectrum.
In the C7, the response is cut in the bass range and boosted in the highs.
This is the response curve coming out of the Bose amplifier in my car, before I upgraded my stereo.

How did you get this data? The severe dip at about 200Hz is very odd...I would expect a roll off from the next higher and lower freqs. If I was trying to equal8ze the sound in a car, I'd probably take out that boomy 200 Hz too, but this is very surgical.....odd.

I measured it myself using Room EQ Wizard.
I routed the output of my laptop sound card into the MMI via the AMI to RCA adapter.
The speaker outputs of the Bose amplifier were connected to my DSP.
I set the DSP to Full Range, No EQ, No time alignment.
Ran a 20Hz -20kHz sine sweep and recorded.
The result was this:
Next I connected the sound card directly into the DSP, bypassing the MMI and Bose system.
Same DSP settings. Full range, no EQ, no TA.
Same sine sweep from 20Hz-20kHz.
Here is the result:
It is strange, but it was definitely real. I measured the same sine sweep directly into the DSP and got a flatline (chart 2 above).
I have 2 guesses as to what the dip was:
1. It's the Noise Cancellation system.
2. It's a notch filter applied to kill a resonance.

Alpine also makes one that should fit in that space:
Alpine PWE-S8 Compact 120-watt powered 8" subwoofer at Crutchfield.com
And Kicker:
Kicker 11HS8 Hideaway? compact powered subwoofer: 150 watts and an 8" sub at Crutchfield.com
Before our Q5 arrived, I was seriously considering adding one of these. But when I finally heard the stock system (non B&O), I found the bass to be perfectly sufficient for normal listening, so I didn't bother with adding an aftermarket sub. Based on what others wrote in this thread, the B&O system is balanced differently and may need some help on the low end.

Anyone Ever Use the Kicker or the Alpine Sub?

Another way...
Just throwing this in since no one seems to have mentioned it so far. It took me too long to realize that I should have taken advantage of the JukeBox feature in my '14TDIQ5. I am by no means a cultured audiophile and I felt that my IPod tethered music was on the upper end of average.
I can attest to the fact that there is a significant improvement in depth and range of sound with the car reading off that internal drive. Give it a try if you haven't already done so. There are folks on the boards who have figured out the ins and out and so a simple Jukebox search will be all you need to do. I didn't know I was gonna fall in love all over again with that car.
And lets not even mention the other features not available with the IPod connection, like album art previews, more playlists and verbal commands to find music. A shout out to Gangee in the A7 forum for his findings, I couldn't have done it without his input.

Or just use one of the available SD card slots. Taking the card out occasionally and bringing it home to upload new music is very easy and quick. Large capacity SD cards are pretty cheap these days.
