Newer Audi windshields seem to be too fragile.

Do check your insurance, sometimes you've bought glass replacement coverage, sometimes there is no deductible for it either. And no penalty (no hikes) for using it.
I think I've replaced 4 (5?) windshields over the years. Last few were SafeLite and their glass was just as good as any major car company. Last time around $250 installed versus $900 for the glass alone from the dealer, that was a no-brainer.
But they are all FRANCHISES so your mileage will vary. If the franchisee doesn't get it 100% right, corporate hq can. I'll never let someone replace my windshield again without me watching it, though. The last time around they apparently didn't apply new primer & sealant thoroughly enough, so a little rust blister formed under the trim, and then one cold winter day, the windshield just started to split from the pressure of that blister. Top enter of the glass, the hardest spot to reach.
Corporate made it right, new glass and bodywork, but it was still a PITA. So if I need to replace glass again, I'm going to want to SEE that the channel is properly cleaned and primed and sealed before the new glass goes in.
Soft glass, hard glass...maybe soft doesn't crack as easily, isn't as brittle when hit. Maybe it is quieter. Who knows, it all has to pass the same federal safety standards.
