"I bought Automatic https://www.automatic.com/ for my Q5 afterwards to get the codes before taking it in and the fault codes it gave were P0491 / P0492."

I'm considering purchasing a 2010 Q5 with 74k miles. This carbon issue has me concerned. Does the warranty extension Audi has offered to cover this issue apply to the 2nd and 3rd owner or just to the first? Is there any quality after market warranties out there people have used for piece of mind? Also the Carfax has no mention of ever having a carbon cleaning, would that even show up? Any advice on this purchase would be appreciated.

You could try having your local dealer run the VIN, I'd imagine any warranty work would appear. Even better if the vehicle was sold/serviced form that same dealer. When I bought mine (there is only one dealer in town), I called them and got a full service history.

I'm in the process of cleaning my valves. do you have to rotate the crankshaft? I just clean what I understand is the cylinder 4 valves without moving it. Is there a risk of the cleaning fluid( brake cleaning parts) to leak inside the engine?
I'll stop for today and continue Sunday. Any input will be appreciate it.
Thanks.

Ok, so I found out that my 6 cylinder valves where actually open, so I rotated the engine and cleaned that one. Then I proceed to clean the injectors. Right bank I replaced one injector and cleaned the other two. Since I had them out it was easy to clean the tip and run injector cleaner through them. I didn't change the combustion chamber seal since I don't have the tool for it. For that reason I cleaned the left bank injectors without taking them out. I put everything together and turn it on. So far runs like a charm.
I also downloaded the Carista app and cleared the codes.
Thanks again to everyone that contribute to this matter.

tcrider, did you take any photos of the carbon buildup on the intake valves? I've not seen any pics of the 3.2 carbon. Now the RS4 on the other hand.... ohhhh boy does it get choked up in a hurry!

Thanks for the pics. Interesting. Looks mostly oily but not the rock-hard stuff I'm used to scraping off the RS4 valves. The thickness of the coke doesn't look all that bad either, although the valves are not very visible in the photos.
How many miles? Based upon the photos, I don't think I'd even bother cleaning the intake carbon.

Once I started scrapping them a lot of carbon came out, so I cleaned them anyways. The car has 89K miles and I hope this was the only time I do it.
