Q5 TDI P+ is 47,500.00 base
Q5 2.0 P+ is 42,200.00 base

For the 5,300.00 difference you get the potential for towing up to 4400 lbs., kick-*** acceleration, great mileage and range, better resale at the end and all of that made it work for me.
I don't give a rats behind if I spend a few more bucks over the ownership span of the vehicle for driving diesel.

Bottom line: the Q5TDI is a fantastic package.

Compare the same engine displacement 3.0TFSI vs 3.0TDI

3.0TFSI Premium Plus = $45,400
3.0TDI Premium Plus = $47,500

It's my first diesel, and am very happy that I chose it. I have been using Power Service Diesel Clean (6-7 oz/tankful) as suggested on this forum. I now have 6,700 miles on my 15 Q5 TDI, and it has exceeded my every expectation.

Still getting used to the tach reading so low, so much bottom-end torque, no high revs required...1,100 rpm at 60 mph in S8... A totally different beast when you put it into S!!

The question was the gas v6 vs. The TDI. That is only at $2100 difference. With the price of deisle where it is now, a driver who logs avg miles on their car should make up that difference in about 2.5 years. Not to mention the avg resale of a desile is about 10% better than gas. Which makes up the difference and then some the moment you drive off the lot.

All that plus the TDI has probably the best engine in the Q series for normal driving conditions, unless you are racing Vin Desile in the quarter mile, the desile is going to give you better performance around town then the v6.

The OP did not specify a V6 gas engine, just a "gas engine". Not to pick nits on the subject. For my money, I think the Q5TDI might be the best package Audi produces for the US market because it is so versatile and hits all the high marks: range capability, mpg, handling, towing, acceleration, safety and luxury. I've owned both the 2.0TFSI and now the 3.0TDI and I can assure you that the TDI is worth every red cent over the 2.0 TFSI.

You are right, I guess the way I read the title was Q5 v6 - Diesel vs Gas, because that is what the real true comparison is.

I did test drive the 2.0 engine and while it was smooth, the power just wasn't there for me. It was OK, but i had my doubts over whether it would be able to pull its weight over time. I have the same feeling when driving the 2.0 A4 as well...hit the peddle and wait...I think I have been spoiled by the torque in the TDI.

$48,100 base price TDI
$40, 900 2.0

So $7,200, i'll be more precise next time

Diesel is $2.59/gallon in NJ.
Ultra 93 is $2.80

.21 a gallon difference, and it's even less of a difference going to costco for 91.

Regarding resale being 10% higher on resale, I'm not seeing that locally, and considering that the cost of the TDI is ~ 5% more on initial purchase, it still doesn't make this a slam dunk financially.

The 2.0 and TDI will both tow 4400 lbs. so that's a wash.
Better MPG? it's a wash if most of your driving is not on highway (which is the case in most of the North East)
Better acceleration? The TDI is half a second faster to 70. Slight tip to TDI, but half a second? that's a wash unless you're racing
TDI weighs more by 400lbs

I currently own an X5 35D, and I've owned a 2.0T 2012 Q5, and buying another, so I have some experience with diesel and the 2.0t, and I'm not bashing either side.

The bottom line is that it's not a slam dunk on which engine package is better, different scenarios will dictate.
