Default Question on Front Parking Sensor

Front parking sensor on my 2015 Q5 works in 2 scenarios (with beep sound)
1. When the "P" button is pressed or
2. When I shift gear to Reverse

Is it normal? or should it also work when I am in "Drive" and go close to any obstacle?

Thanks

I think that is how it works on my 2014. If true, it certainly is important to understand that it works this way and will not give you a warning when moving forward behind another car... without activating the sensor.

Yes, that's normal. If it operated in Drive, it would be going off all the time as you come to a stop behind a car. Your car will be approx. 6" from the obstacle when the sensor indicator or sound shows it's at the closest distance.

Thanks for clarifying...
I was wondering what is the purpose of front sensors if they work only when I am backing up or when I push the P button myself.

I had the sensors on permanently in my old Peugeot RCZ coupe and they didn't come on all the time when I pulled up behind a car...unless I was right up close to it of course. I don't particularly like Audi's take on having to push the button yourself. The Peugeot was much more user friendly.

I have 2016 Q5 and mine works when in drive and close to front obstacles.

Thanks for sharing.
I was wondering what are the improvements for 2016 and this one seems to be a good one to start with.

Yeah it is annoying that you have to push "P" to activate sensor. However I do like the fact that the P turns on camera. Very handy when I pull forward in my garage. I can push P to make sure I pull in enough.

Is that the parking system or forward collision warning though?
