Default Rough first shift

On a cold engine, that first shift from 1st to 2nd gear is always pretty rough in our Q5. It appears the trans is holding the rpms higher and then violently slams into 2nd. It only happens once. All subsequent 1st to 2nd shifts and all other shifts are fine. And it only happens when the car wasn't driven for hours.

Is this a cause for concern or do they all do this? Currently at 3K miles.

Mine does exactly the same. After that abrupt first shift you can feel tranny resisting even in higher gears, takes about 5 -10 minutes depending on outside temp to get warmed up and go smooth again.

MY2012 Q5, 44K miles.
I can't use the word 'violent' but mine's similar with your scenario.
I've adjusted because I know its' behavior. I'm easier on the pedal initially and don't push it until things warm up. And it's much milder when I start out in 'S' mode.

Also, for mine, the 'turbo lag' type behavior only occurs when cold...

Mine does this too. Didn't happen last year, but started doing it this year.

Last year in the cold id get a whining noise, this year its gone and switched to a jerky shift. Go figure.

Funny thing is on ours it actually shifts smoother when you give it more gas. Alas, since the engine/trans is cold right after a start, I typically baby it by giving it very little gas, and that's when this abrupt 1st to 2nd is most noticeable. Weird.

The trans mount from 034 helped with this so much.

Good to know. I have it. Just didn't have a chance to install it yet.

My experience with my 2014 is exactly the same. I still hate this transmission. The dual clutch tranny is on my Audi wishlist, hopefully in the near future.

I have it installed a while ago, it definitely works as intended. Still, in the cold, especially <32F, first shift is abrupt and trans is not smooth until warmed up.

Same thing on my 2013. First couple shifts are rough and first few stops the brakes squeal.
