A Congressional hearing: An event where political clowns in suits try to outdo each other while posturing for the cameras but get nothing done.

Anyone see the irony here?

I thought the email was total crap. How can we trust a car company whose executives had the b*lls to cheat multiple government oversight agencies? How far does this rabbit hole go? What other things did they lie about? crash tests? safety systems? component reliabilities?

What most owners don't realize is that once their cars are "fixed", they won't run as well as they do now. The only reason for the engineers to alter the software on the production units was they would not run right with "correct" software. So now your local dealer will fix your car, but it will run like crap. If I had one of those cars, and it fine now, i would not any dealer touch it.

I wouldn't say they will run like "crap". Fuel efficiency and HP will likely be affected but the ECU can be reprogrammed to have the engine run just fine. I believe the whole point of VAG fooling with the emissions testing was to be able to claim a specific competitive power performance and EPA mpg ratings. Unfortunately, they took an illegal shortcut affecting emissions to achieve the results.

Story about real world testing
The headline on this is wrong, but it summarizes a new Consumer Reports test.
Corrected headline should be acceleration largely unchanged on newer ones (that have AdBlue) but fall off on older ones; both lose fuel economy:
Consumer Reports shows VW diesels are slower and less fuel efficient in 'cheat mode' | MLive.com
Note though they didn't seem to get into whether or not that would be sufficient, especially assuming the EPA gives these all the complete proctology exam going forward. Another story said VW thought injector changes may be in order. Well, if you are doing that, you may be lessening fuel flow at peak. Unlike a gas motor, diesels are variable mixture fundamentally. Would not affect idle or smoothness most likely. A guess is less fuel at higher loads will logically pull down the combustion temps, which is where the NOx goes up a lot at least on gas motors. And of course less diesel means directly less power. Good luck selling that to owners.
