Default Service Due Reminder

Hi Everyone,

My "Service Due" reminder keeps staring at me on every start up and shut down even though I do not believe I need service yet. I drive my 2013 Q5 only about 4000 miles a year, and had an oil change at 5K exactly one year ago. I know this is a timing thing and not a mileage thing because it gives me days and not miles. I am able to reset the oil change (miles) through the MMI but cant seem to clear the service due "warning". Am I not able to clear it myself or am I doing something wrong? BTW I currently have just over 9K miles on the vehicle.
Do I need to go to the dealer to get this reset?

The service reminder light can only be reset with a VCDS cable and software or the dealer.

Exactly. It's actually the "inspection" service setting that triggers this second warning (not oil change). Why it's not resettable via the MMI is puzzling given that they do allow the oil change service to be reset that way.

Thank you for the reply. Can you give me a part number of what I will need to get in order to do it myself? I plan on keeping this car for a few more years and maybe replacing it with another Audi.

When I had mine in for service the dealership charged $30 for the reset. I didn't notice until I got home but it seemed like a bit of a ripoff to me and something that should be included in the service. Live and learn. Next time I won't be so na´ve.

$30!?!? This just happened to our Q5 recently. I just showed up to our dealer and the service advisor took care of it. Pulled it in the garage himself and 10 minutes later it was back out front ready to go. No charge.

If the dealer does the service, resetting the reminder should have been included in the cost of service or Audi Care. If you did the service yourself, while it's a bit cheesy, the dealer is technically justified to charge for the 15 minutes it took to hook it up to the computer and do the reset.

The dealer did the service. Considering the cost of the service, it seems like the reset should be included.

No Audi Care in this case.

If I read the website correctly, what I need to purchase is a cable ($250) and I can download the rest. My manual says my next service is due at 15 K miles. I drive less than 5 K per year with this vehicle ( I have other cars) so why is this reminder based on time?

There are two reminders in the system. One is for actual "service" (oil service) and the other is termed an "inspection" service. Since in many states inspections are done once per year, it's set up by default to be a one year period. Oil service reminders can be set up based on several different criteria but it's usually set up for 10,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. I'm in the same boat as I put less than 5K miles a year on my S4 but I do have a VCDS setup so I can easily reset the reminders when they do occur.

Thank you all for the replies. It all makes sense now. So along with my laptop, is the one cable described above all I will need? I do realize I need to download the software as well. I love my Q5 and plan on replacing it with another in a few years so this would be an investment in the future.

Default Oil changes are at 10K miles, or 1 year which ever is 1st.

Actually, assuming you have a PC laptop with a USB connector, this is the one you need ($349):

Ross-Tech Store: VCDS License with HEX-USB+CAN Unlimted VIN (All VAG)

Audi recommends scheduled maintenance every 10K miles OR 12 months after the 5K service, whicever comes first. I believe the service reminder alert works the same way.

So select the "inspection service" and change the number to reflect your next mileage (for me it was 250 for 25,000 mi) and the annoyance ceases!!

Because the oil in your engine still goes bad after some time due to exposure to moisture and fuel, oxidation, etc., regardless if you drove 5K miles or 10K miles that year.

You need to go to the dealer to get your oil changed, and they should reset the reminder as part of the service.
