Default So my dad asked me to look into a 14 or 15 Q5, what are the diffs?

Hi guys,

I've been an Audi owner for a LONG time and just the other day my dad calls me and tells me he wants to get a Q5, either a '14 or '15. Being 'the Audi guy', I'm now charged for looking at the differences between the model years and also finding him a 'good' deal. I'm going to recommend CPO to him and have a fair bit of knowledge myself to spot some obvious issues and via VCDS, but am reaching out to the forum to see if any of you can give me an BIG differences between the model years?

Most likely I'll be looking at a 2.0T but rather basically packadged, since he honestly becomes rather overwhelmed with too much tech. Mind you he formerly had an 80s land rover, late model XJ, and currently has a Chrysler Intrepid (yuck), so tech and for that matter, reliability, haven't been strong factors in his purchasing decision.

He liked the way the Audi drove and he feels that if he buys an Audi, he's got me to potentially help troubleshoot...which I definitely would.

TIA

Default All laid out in an Audi USA document

See attached.

And anticipating a follow up question, no I haven't found one so far for 2016.

Thanks SO much for this! It helps quite a bit and no need for the '16, since my dad specifically stated he'd prefer to buy something used or a year older, whereby the initial new-owner depreciation has already been accounted for.

2014 TDI is the way to go! I've test driven every Q5 and it still stands out as my favorite version. That extra power and fuel efficiency is worth the price premium. Tell him to test drive it, he won't regret it!

never thought about the TDI. He did test drive the GLK250 Bluetec and really liked it, the fact it's a diesel was a plus due to the increased mileage and torque. I'll start looking around for one. Cheers

Get the 14 TDI... I traded in my 12 2.0T for 14 TDI and I couldn't be happier... way more power than the 2.0T and uses way less fuel!

Agreed - get a TDi if you can find one.

For what it's worth, the Q5 TDi has the highest customer satisfaction rating in its segment according to Consumer Reports. (I know, I know, "who cares about CR?", but I think it says something that the TDi's satisfaction rating is notably higher than any other vehicle in the class)

I freekin' LOVE ours. Believe it or not, it even makes my (tuned, 12.5- second) B8 S4 feel a bit "weak in the knees" in the cut and thrust of traffic. Yes, really.

If he liked the GLK250 then he'd probably love the TDI in the Q5. The GLK's got a twin-turbo 4-cylinder vs. the single-turbo 6-cylinder. I haven't driven the GLK myself, but reviews seem mixed on the engine whereas the TDI gives smooth performance, so the Q5 should be even better than the GLK. From my little research prior to buying, pricing of the GLK250 isn't very much less than a similar Q5 TDI either -- not sure what resale differences are like, though.

A TDI would be a big price step up from a 2.0T, though, at least when new (though your dad would be the one to say what's "worth it" to him ). TDIs at least used to hold their value really well which could increase the price difference used, but I haven't looked so it'd be hard to say anyway. Supply could be limited anyway since at least typically, TDI owners don't tend to let theirs go easily, whereas a 2.0T might be available from someone upgrading to 3.0T/TDI/S and have been available longer so there's more model years available out there.
