Still amazed by my TDI fuel economy!

I was alone in the car, with the roof rack on and 20" summer tires. The terrain you're driving on has the biggest impact, I've noticed. The first 180 miles or so was mostly flat, wide-open highway (NY Thruway) and the remainder was back roads through VT. Going uphill would cause the average to drop by a few MPG, but the coasting on the long downhill sections would make up for it.
I used to make a 120 mile drive to Maine a few times per week, and the highway there was flat enough that I had an average over 40mpg (at 75-80) before I got to the hilly Maine Turnpike.

Yeah, we had a road trip with great mileage - computer was showing about 38mpg (3 pax, light luggage, slightly rolling highway, AC on), but when my wife with the lead foot took over, and the speed notched up from about 70 to 80, the mileage dropped a couple mpg.

On average I'd say the trip computer is about 1-1.5 MPG optimistic. I recall another owner tweaking this with VAG but I've not done that (yet).

This makes sense. Our Q was fully loaded - bursting at the seams - with approximately 1000 pounds of cargo. And given our 75 - 85 MPH stretches of driving, I'm feeling pretty good about 31MPG.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I've been watching out for barely used TDI q5's with low miles. I live in a non-Carb state (AL). Should be no issue correct? IE I wouldn't have to take the car in for a recall/fix if it came down to it? The way I see if not having emissions test means I'm free to enjoy the car.
Starting to see some good deals out there. Obviously they aren't CPO'd , but still have a decent amount of regular warranty left.

I'd think this could be a really good time to pick up a lightly-used Q5 TDi, and if you're anything like most of us owners, you'll LOVE the car!

21,000 miles and I'm averaging a calculated 32MPG. I get about (on average) 34MPG in the summer and 29MPG in winter. There are a lot of economy car owners that would be happy to get that.

very impressive! This is what has drawn me to seeking a TDI q5. If I may ask..how have service costs been for the car? Any service that is different or added due to it being a diesel vs the 2.0T? Thanks.
