Default Sunroof Weight

On a different thread it was mentioned that there is a noticeable improvement in acceleration and handling on non sunroof equipped SQ5's because it reduces overall weight of the vehicle more than 100 pounds. It's easy to understand why 100 pounds would make a difference, but I would have guessed that a sunroof would add less than half that amount of weight. I understand that it's much more than just the sunroof (also the frame, motor, and perhaps extra roof bracing) but does it really increase the weight that much? Thanks.

Default Yes, all those reasons, plus

the glass itself is a good amount heavier than the sheet metal area it displaces. It also raises the center of gravity at the same time, and at the area highest up/with the most effect to start with. Little stuff like the blind for it, the pop up air deflector, the drain system tubing, etc. also add to the incremental total weight.

Wow! That's more than 200 lbs! I'm trying to imagine how many technicians it takes to lift a new one in when in the event a replacement is needed.

That was me. I knew that the weight of a standard-sized sunroof is around 40 pounds. However, until seeing spijun's spec above, I was just guessing that the panoramic one was at least 100 pounds. At nearly 230 pounds, I was way off! Thanks spijun! That is substantial!

Now, I'm guessing the weight of the metal that it replaces to be around 30 pounds, so let's talk about those 200 extra pounds...they are on the roof! For a simple demonstration, strap 200 pounds to the roof of any regular-sized vehicle and see if you notice it. I do have a couple of minor complaints about my (still new) SQ5, but the panoramic sunroof deletion isn't one of them. After driving both, I am thrilled that I waited the extra time to get one without. It's not so much the acceleration (although it is most likely the reason for my bone-stock, 0-60 time of 5.0 sec.), but the handling is noticeably, greatly improved. Aesthetically...I'm kind of a cave-dweller, so I really like the darker and cooler interior.

spijun: I'm starting a new thread that I would like your technical input on, regarding the noticeable negative camber at the rear wheels.

That sounds about right. On an RS4 the difference with/without sunroof is about 70 pounds, and that sunroof is what - about 1/4 the size? I ordered my RS4 without sunroof and have never ever regretted it. If I want to go topless, I'll ride my motorcycle or borrow my daughter's A4 cab. I hate sunroofs!

Has anyone weighed their SQ5? Is the tech spec curb weight of 4400lbs with or without the sunrooof?
(Assuming "with" since the sunroof delete is an option.)

I just weighed my S4 at the local track and mine is about 200lbs over the spec.(I accounted for the difference between my weight and the 75kg European driver. I assume my options account for the rest of the difference? (19" + nav + sport diff...)

I've got one without the sunroof and enjoying every moment of it. Where can I weigh it though?

Track or a scrap metal place usually has a scale to weigh you before and after dropping off...they may charge you a couple bucks to just simply weigh it though...

I saw the weight on a standard Prem+ with sunroof at 4409. As soon as I took delivery, I looked for the sticker in the driver's door jam. I didn't get one. I thought they were a mandatory U.S. thing. I saw somewhere that a fully loaded Prestige weighs 4472. If I had to guess, I'd say mine weighs around 4220, but I would need to actually weigh it to confirm that.
