Why no 4.0 TFSI Q5 / SQ5? Would be a sleeper beast!

I'd put my money down in a heartbeat to get a 4.0 V8 in an SQ5! Alas, that won't happen anytime soon!

Probably won't fit. The 4.0TFSI isn't offered in any of the SQ5s platform mates- the RS4 and RS5 - despite the likelihood that its inclusion would make an RS4/5 class leader. My money says the next gen B9 RS4 has a 4.0TFSI which would mean a possible RSQ5 would be easy to do. Audi isn't worried about cannibalizing Porsche sales.

Perhaps this will be an engine choice for Q6 or Q8. Q8 won't be here till 2020 though.

Can't decide if the original poster is a troll or if his elevator doesn't go all the way to the top floor.

Hello all -

First of all, sorry for the error on the reference to the 3.2 vs 3.0 TFSI

The 3.0 TFSI seems "quick" with the SQ tune or an APR tune. Not as quick as X5M or Porsche Turbo or SRT, but still quick, especially for the price.

It seems like the 4.0 TFSI in a Q5 would conceptually be similar to using a 4.0 TFSI in creating an S6. And Audi already uses transmissions that would handle the power.

Charge an extra 10K-20K over Q5 (similar to A6 vs S6 delta and A8 3.0 TFSI vs A8 4.0 TFSI delta) and you would be cheaper than and as fast as an X5M or M63? And in a more subtle, sleeper, cool package.

Interesting thoughts above on possible reasons it hasn't been produced.

Thanks again for the thoughts and perspective.

I was curious if this had been discussed and if there was a reason why this engine hasn't been put in a Q5.

The amount of testing and cost needed to add a bigger engine that was not used in that platform would be too much for the market to bear. The RS5 already had the V8 in it when it was introduced so the amount of crash and other testing were minimal.

The Jeep SRT and the SQ5 are pretty much neck and neck, both have been tested a 4.6 0-60 with the SQ5 doing the 1/4 mile in 13.1 and the SRT in 13.2. The X5M is a different class even though interior room is pretty close as is the Cayenne. The Macan is obviously its closest competition, up to you to decide if it's worth the extra money.

Id also argue the 4.0TFSI is likely larger, and is certainly a more complicated fit with the turbo plumbing, than the 4.2 NA v8 in the RS4/5.

I believe there was a lot of speculation that the RS4/5 would get the 4.0TFSI in this gen and Quattro actually said it would not fit.

Please keep in mind that the X5 and the Cayenne are larger than the Q5. If you want to compare sizes, you should be looking at a Q7, but that one has not been S'ified yet.

For accurate comparison, you should compare the SQ5 to an X3 or Macan.
