Perhaps unique to the Q5, but our 2015 Q5 does have the traditional slot and it is functional.

It is true, this exists in all models Q5 (A4 and A5) - with and without Advance Key Option

If the key does not work for some reason (i.e. dead battery), there is a sensor on the dash marked by a key symbol where you hold the extra plastic emergency key up to it while pressing the start button. Also, a mechanical key can be removed from the fob should the battery die to lock/unlock the car. The fob case portion with the key removed can also be used as a valet key if you want the trunk/hatch to remain locked when handing the car over to an attendant.
This is true but for the A6, A7, not for A4, A5, Q5

Ok. Looks like Audi is still including the slot for the B8 series. In the 2011 (2012 US) C7 series, the slot is gone, replaced by the in-dash sensor.

Looks like the PANIC button is only in countries where there's a "higher risk" of being car jacked or attacked.
Our Q5s in Trinidad & Tobago don't come with a panic button and we probably have a moderate to high (depending on location) of being attacked. But it could be useful. So no think it's just a N.America option.
