Spijun-
In America, all cars are born in September of the preceding year. Much the same way that thoroughbred race horses all are "the same" age based on one day of the year.
So, in September of 2015, all of the 2016 model cars were released and available for sale.
Of course these days auto makers release cars all year long. Sometimes they skip a year (there was no 2009 Nissan Murano, IIRC, even though the dealers sold a lot of something that looked like one in that year), sometimes they fiddle around a bit. The original Ford Mustang was a "1964 and a half" model, released well after September '63.
The rational behind this is actually very rational. July or August is the big vacation month for factory workers, and car sales are normally dead in August. So that's when Detroit traditionally shut down the plants to retool for the next model year. June was usually the last month of "build out", if a dealer didn't have orders in and confirmed by then, they wouldn't promise it could be built, because the factories HAD to shut down for retooling.
So yes, CR has good reason to think that by the end of 2015, all the 2016 model year cars were already on the market. Anything later would be a "2016 and a half" lame duck.
These days? Come on, after Dieselgate, whose word would you believe about cars?(G)
