How big is the tank in the Q5? My A6 TDI has a 19.2 gal tank and I'm generally filling up with 550 miles on the tripometer and 30-40 miles showing to empty - almost without fail, the tank takes 17.5-17.8 gallons ($65-$70 @ $3.85/gal) at that point which averages out to 31 mpg over 4k miles (trip computer is showing 32.8 mpg so it's about 6% high).

Saturday I found diesel for 3.45 a gallon nearby (SW of Chicago) - most places are still 3.79. At 3.45, it's only 10 cents more a gallon than our no lead is. THAT I can deal with, when no lead was 3.30 and diesel was 3.85, it really bugged me.

Compared to my previous truck that got 20MPG on required premium fuel, I benefit from lower diesel price compared to premium (which around here is 45 cents more than no lead) and at 32MPG compared to 20MPG, I can't complain whatever it costs me to fill up the tank. I have a spreadsheet that does a comparison calculation for me and in 1658 miles of driving so far, I've saved $121 dollars compared to driving the old truck.

You may be putting $75 bucks in Mark, but find some solace in knowing you won't have to do it very often.

Ironically, I also have a sheet comparing my 93oct A3 vs my TDI Q5 with varying fuel prices. Mine isn't as dramatic as your difference, but it's still there

Q5 is quoted at 19.8 gallons, but there's clearly more space than that. I've been mostly filling up right around 0 miles remaining, some a little after. It seems there's still 2+ gallons after that.

My card has a $100 limit.

The Q does have a rather large tank....at least it's not a cayenne or Touraeg with a 26 gallon tank.

I wonder if it's the card or the station? I would think the station would determine how much they are putting a "hold" on your card for???

I have a station-specific "rewards" card that gets me $0.03/gal discount before pumping and my PenFed Visa gets me 5% cashback (credited on each statement automatically) on Fuel purchases. So I'm quite fond of this station+card combo regardless

It's the station, and the limits often differ on debit cards vs. credit cards.

No sense in accumulating more stops to fill up over time, and carting around fuel not to use. I'd rather just take the extra 30 seconds to stop in the middle of filling up to stop and restart a new transaction. That's more efficient than stopping at the gas station more often...

It's just annoying that the station I frequent most often has the limit so close to what I'm trying to fill to. Other stations may be different, but I don't want to hit the same limit there to find out. So I'll probably just get in the habit of filling $25 and start a new transaction...

In Vancouver Canada, Shell v-power 91 costs $1.42 per litre.

so to fill up a q5 from empty to full costs $106.5. US gas price has always been 30% cheaper.....
