Documentation Fee?

Documentation Fee?
I'm trying to order a new 2012 Q5 in Scottsdale, Arizona. The dealer wants $489 for "Documentation Fee." Does anyone know how much, if any, of this fee is legit? Thanks.

I've seen this fee range anywhere from $100 to $600. It's really up to you how much, if any, you pay. FWIW, just about every dealer is charging this now since we live in an era of buying cars at "dealer's invoice" which leaves them very little to work with.

Check out this link from Edmunds (similar info to what TIME89 posted previously, but gives breakdown of various fees by state):

I paid $300, but I have seen some dealers charge as much as $500. I always ask up front, what is the doc fee now and if there is any prep fee. Car dealers are getting as bad as airlines, they want to charge the customers for every little thing.
