Default 2012 Q7 nav update?

My local dealer has told me that to update my map database and upgrade the MMI software in my 2012 Q7 it would run me about $660. They also stated that I cannot perform the update myself, rather it has to be run through the Audi system.

Really???

Is there a way I can do it myself?

I currently have database: 8R0-060-884-AD NAR 5.5.5
I understand the most recent is: 8R0-060-884-BL NAR 6.9.2

My s/w version is: HN+_US_AU3G_P0487

Thanks

I just had the navigation update done on my 2010 Q7 TDI. Cost was $225. They needed to update the MMI to insure the software versions were consistent.

Pre-facelift / MMI 2G Nav can be updated yourself. MMI 3G cannot. That one requires authentication that can only be done through Audi.

stupid question, but does updating the navi on my 2011 change anything else besides road maps? i.e. will the screen look like a 2014+ Q7 navi?

You can update yourself. There are sites that sell the firmware and maps. Your firmware may need updated to use the latest map version. I updated my firmware myself trying to solve a problem with my Sirius radio. It was pretty simple. You just need to follow the directions. Google for
Audi MMI firmware upgrade
that will get you to the sites that offer it and the instructions. The map and firmware pack is around $120 IIRC. I was able to find the firmware for free on gpsunderground. They also have map files there also, but I couldn't find US maps in my flavor posted there or I would have done the maps also.
